When I was in college, a million years ago, my best friend and I were driving from Austin to Ft. Worth. The car broke down in West. We did not know where we were and asked a policeman who stopped to "help" us out. He said we were in West Texas. And, we heard it that way: West Texas. No comma. Ha ha. "We're in Central Texas...where are we really?" we wanted to know. Instead of saying that the name of the town was "West" he told us how many miles we were from Waco. Or some such. My best friend's dad, who had to come rescue us from Ft. Worth, was very amused. He knew "West, Texas" from "West Texas" very well.
